Chapter Five

I didn’t know how long I’d been out, but when I woke, it was getting dark.

I had been dreaming, but something had woken me from my slumber, a noise or a sensation.

Thinking it might be Sultan coming back, I stretched my legs and arms and unfolded myself from the fetal position I’d been in.

I crawled out of the warmth and safety of my little cover and listened for Sultan.

I didn’t hear anything in the forest, and was about to curl back up when I did hear my name.

I heard somebody call my name. Taylor and Drake must have come looking for me after all!

“Over here!” I yelled, scanning in the dim light for the person who had called for me.

“Camille!” a male voice yelled and I realized it wasn’t the twins. It was Cole.

He had come for me.

“Cole! I’m down here!” I called back.

He broke through the brush on a huge black horse, his cowboy hat was pulled down over his face and his jacket was done up to his neck.

He looked like he’d ridden out of another time, from the old west, and my breath caught in my throat at how handsome he was.

“My god,” he said as he reached me and leapt from his horse, “I thought we’d lost you. Camille, what the hell were you thinking?”

“I got turned around,” I said, grabbing the hand he held out for me.

“Why did you come out here with them?” he asked, his voice deep and intense and almost angry. “I told you to be careful with them.”

“I thought it would be fun,” I said, “I was stupid, I see that now.”

“You’re not stupid, you’re fragile, and they took advantage of that,” he said, his voice calmer but sounding ragged. “You are precious, Camille, and they don’t see the value in that.”

“I don’t know if that’s it,” I said, my breath coming faster as his hand still held mine. “I know they’re bad for me, but I still follow them when they tell me to.”

“You’re looking for love, and a girl like you shouldn’t look for love…” he trailed off, his eyes dark and unreadable. He seemed unable to finish his thoughts and said, “But let’s get you somewhere dry before we talk about this. You’re going to catch your death of cold.”

With that he undid his big oiled canvass jacket and swung it over my shoulders. It dragged on the ground, it was so large on me, but I loved it. It was still warm with his body heat and his scent still clung to the fibers.

He mounted up on his horse and reached down to grab my hand. He pulled me up and slid me on the saddle in front of him.

The rain had eased off to a fine mist, but it was getting darker and darker, the sun was going down so the cold was coming in.

“I don’t know if we’ll make it back to the ranch before dark,” he said behind me. He wrapped one arm around me and I eased back against his hard, broad body.
